Model PEE paragraph:
The poet uses a really good simile in the first line to describe the soldiers. “like old beggars under sacks”. This doesn’t describe the soldiers like we would expect at all and is a shock – we expect young, healthy soldiers. However, here they are described as like old people – not only that but as beggars or tramps – and as weak old people struggling to walk with the weight of their backpacks.
