The children will be studying a range of texts including:
Explanation Texts- We will read, compare and contrast a range of explanation texts and identify common features. The children will use the learnt techniques and language style to write their own explanations.
Information Texts- The children will read and write information texts based on the topic of the Mountains.
Authors and Letters-Here we will look at the work of Beatrix Potter and will create fact files about her life. We will also write letters from the various characters.
Reading Comprehension : Through our daily guided reading activities we will be focussing on developing the children’s ability to fully understand the text and to communicate that in written answers to comprehension questions. This will also be the focus of the literacy homework this half term.
Problem Solving: The children will be solving a variety of mathematical problems in all areas of Numeracy, choosing appropriate equipment, units, number operations and calculation methods and explaining & reasoning their methods.
We will also be covering in depth:
Counting, Partitioning and Calculating Securing Number Facts
Understanding Shape Handling Data
Measuring in standard units Relationships between numbers
Recalling learnt number facts, specific maths language and methods for calculation will be a particular focus this term. Indeed, the times tables learnt so far, will be reviewed because they are so important to calculation.
Separating solids and liquids-In this topic the children will work on recognising solids, liquids and gases and being able to separate them.
Rocks and soils-Here they will group soils and rocks according to their properties and will be able to name some of their characteristics.
Geography - The Mountain Environment-The children will look at the world’s major mountain ranges, look at mountain weather and the effects of tourism in these areas.
History- The Vikings-The children will learn about why people invaded and how they settled in Britain long ago. We will also look at their religious beliefs and homelifes.
ICT – Weather and Vikings-In ICT we will look at fact files and images of various mountain ranges around the world and we will record the weather data in these places. We will create digital graphs from the data and will create digital information texts . The children will also produce PowerPoint presentations about the Vikings.
RE - The children will be learning about religious artefacts. They will look at how memories are linked to particular objects and how religious artefacts often symbolise key beliefs.
Design Technology–The children will be investigating different types of sandwiches and designing their own sandwich appropriate for a mountain adventure.
PSHE –Here the children will be learning about ‘Relationships’. In this theme the children will explore the times when
they have felt guilty or hurt someone, particularly someone close to them, and begin to explore how they might make amends. The children will look at how we can hurt each other's feelings through the use of put-downs, and the impact of these on others. They will have an opportunity to reflect upon the people who are important to them.

Art- The children will be exploring painting and colour, including looking at the artwork of Turner and Dubuffet.
