Cranberry Primary and Nursery School
REWARDS AND SANCTIONS POLICY – September 2012
School Motto
In this school, we all show Courtesy, Consideration and Respect.
Golden Rules
We are gentle.
We are kind and helpful.
We listen.
We are honest.
We work hard.
We look after property.
At Cranberry Primary and Nursery School, we believe that children need to have clear boundaries and structure in order for them to feel safe and achieve. Children should always be given the opportunity to feel success. Children should always have the opportunity to understand and correct any inappropriate behaviour. Parents and carers should be given the opportunity to know when rewards and sanctions are given. This policy aims to ensure that these principles are embedded into our school culture and are effective – therefore this policy will be reviewed periodically.
The boundaries are clearly defined using a set of six Golden Rules on which this policy is based, a copy of which is visible in every classroom. All rewards and sanctions are based on these Golden Rules and should be referred to when speaking to children. It is imperative that the Golden Rules are always clearly stated when issuing rewards or sanctions. Underpinning the Golden Rules is our school motto, which is referred to as showing ‘CCR’.
Variations of the Golden Rules are also on display in other areas of school – the playground and the dining hall.
Throughout each week, teachers will have a system for monitoring the behaviour of pupils in their class. General classroom management is at the discretion of the teacher and teachers are encouraged to have their own set of rewards and sanctions for their own class for day-to-day classroom management.
For instances of extreme behaviour that break any of the Golden Rules, the school has adopted a ‘It’s Good to be Green!’ card system. There are three possible cards that children could receive – green, yellow and red. Each classroom will have a visible display showing which colour card each pupil has earned during the day. Every morning children will start with a green card. Teachers should record at the end of the week, which cards children have earned.Rewards and sanctions will be based on the Golden Rules using the card system as a means of monitoring throughout the week.
Each week, there will be a whole school Celebration Assembly to share in the success of the children.
Rewards
There are a range of rewards available to children:
It’s Good to be Green!
Children who have stayed ‘green’ all week, will be entitled to attend the school ‘Golden Time’ on Friday afternoon.Children who have stayed ‘green’ for a whole term, will be rewarded with a class party, organised by their class teachers.
Green Frog Awards
Children will have a nominated week when they will receive the ‘Green Frog’ certificate. This ensures that every child has a chance to feel success. During the Celebration Assembly, the child’s teacher will share with the school all the positive attributes of that child. Each week, the ‘Green Frog’ recipient will be awarded with lunch with the Head of School on the following Monday at 12.00 noon.
CCR Certificate
Children will be able to earn ‘CCR Tickets’ throughout the week. The tickets can be awarded by any member of staff and reflect the child’s demonstration of Courtesy, Consideration and Respect – the school’s motto. At the Celebration Assembly, a ticket will be selected and the child will receive a CCR Certificate.
Lunchtime Award
Lunchtime Supervisors will have the opportunity to award pupils that demonstrate adherence to the Golden Rules at lunchtime, with a ‘Lunchtime Aware’ certificate. At Celebration Assembly, a Lunchtime Supervisor will present the awards.
Celebration Assembly
Opportunities for awards issued in Celebration Assembly are outlined above. All children that have received a certificate during Celebration Assembly will be entitled to sit at the ‘Dinnertime Diamonds’ table on Friday lunchtimes. A member of staff will also sit at the table each week.
Sanctions
Yellow and Red Cards
When children have shown extreme behaviour that breaks a Golden Rule they will be issued with the appropriate card and this will be shown on the classroom display for the day. An outline of what that could be is outlined below, but is at the discretion of the teacher – remembering that offences should always be related to the Golden Rule that has been broken, and that red cards are for more severe instances. Children who receive a yellow card during the week will lose 5 minutes, for each card that they have received, of Golden Time on Friday afternoons. Children who receive a red card during the week will attend the ‘Reflection Room’, which will be scheduled at the same time as Golden Time, meaning that those children will miss Golden Time.

Reflection Room
The Reflection Room is a designated area within school that is supervised by two nominated members of staff. The purpose of attending the Reflection Room is to establish the underlying issues where a child has received a red card. Staff in the Reflection Room will offer an opportunity for children to understand how to put right their behaviour.
The Reflection Room will be available on Friday at 2.15 p.m. It is important that children fully understand how they have broken the rule before they attend a session. Staff are asked to complete a Record Log each week, Friday to Thursday, for their class, that will be passed to one of the nominated members of staff at the end of school day on Thursday. This ensures that the session addresses their needs.
Parents will be asked to collect their child from the Reflection Room at the end of the day to create an opportunity for dialogue or alternatively, will receive a telephone call outlining the incident. |
