Engaging Parents through Online Reporting

Parents want more open communication with schools about their children's well-being, progress and achievement.

The Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) expects all secondary schools to use ICT for online reporting by September 2010 and primary schools by 2012.

Some schools are already using a range of online reporting technologies to communicate more openly and engage with parents, including:

  • websites and portals
  • text and phone messaging
  • email
  • electronic newsletters
  • learning platforms
  • podcasts and school radio.

Online Reporting Headteacher Conference (23 Feb 2010)
Wirral LA recently held a conference for Primary, Specialist Provision and Secondary Headteachers and School Leaders. The delegate list on the day also included CYPD staff from the Learning & Achievement Branch and the SIMS Support team. We were also delighted to welcome some school Governors.

The aim of the Conference was to ensure colleagues had up to date information , opportunities to voice concerns and "blue sky" think.

Angela Allen, Wirral's ICT Adviser frequently stressed that reporting on data was not enough. She articulated the need for schools to careful plan for this and how the BECTA resources, VLE team and the LA could support schools in making this a positive aspect of a school's community to engage parents in their child's learning.

We were delighted that Mr Stuart Brady shared how his school use the LA Learning Platform to engage parents and pupils and his thoughts on using data to inform parents.

Mr Jeremy Woodham also shared how his Secondary school were approaching this, as the pilot Parental Reporting school. Jeremy demonstrated the system live to the delegates.

Mr Mark Rowley spoke about how BECTA were supporting schools and again stressed the need for careful planning and gaining the views of all the school community.

Mr Keith Jenkins demonstrated the updates Uniservity are making next week to the Parental Reporting system and explained how they are working with the LA and the pilot school to develop a system that is effective and useful. Keith also shared with the audience a sneak preview of the "new look" to the Learning Platform . This is to be called "LIFE" and is much more modern looking and can be customised by individual users. LIFE wil be launched later this year

Each delegate received a copy of the BECTA Engaging parents through online reporting: Secondary school DVD resource

This is a comprehensive guide, background and supporting materials to online reporting for schools. The booklet and accompanying DVD includes slides that can be edited for presentation purposes and case study films for both the primary and secondary sectors. In addition the DVD contains useful links to subject areas such as safeguarding children online, Next Generation Learning and frequently asked questions.

This resource was mailed directly to all Secondary schools in January via BECTA
