St John's CE Primary School, Thornham > Class R

Welcome to Reception
Our First Day at School September 2012

In the Reception classroom you will meet Miss Murphy (class teacher), and we are very lucky to welcome
Mrs Witts (TA) into our classroom this term.

You will also meet Billy Bear and Millie Bear-if you are lucky you might get to take them home for a weekend.

Reception class enjoy a wide range of learning activities each day - be sure to check back here for photos!

Most days start with a guided reading session, followed by Maths, then we have time to learn through
play and exploration, before our Phonics lesson, where we learn the letter sounds that will help us read
and write. After that we do some exciting work on our topic, and that's all before lunch! After lunch
we do WriteDance to help our writing skills, then we continue to learn independently through play before
story and song time. Our days are filled with learning but in a playful, exciting way - we explore,
discover, experiment, investigate and communicate - and still find time to celebrate special religious
and cultural festivals, get fit in PE, respond to the children' interests, needs and what is happening
in the world around them!

This half term our topic will be 'DESTINATION: OUTER SPACE'. We will find out what it's like to go to space,
we will play in our very own space capsule in class, we will eat space food, we will write our own fantasy story about
an imaginary planet, and fingers crossed we will visit a planetarium in Liverpool!

Practise your tricky words here

Look, cover, write, check - focuses on the spelling of high frequency words. You can simply type in the words that your child need to work on for them to play the game with.

Machine - great for blending sounds together

Cluster - If you ask your child to spell a simple three letter word e.g. hen, tin, pit many of them will be able to do it. The next step is to make sure they can read the word back to you by sounding the word out and blending the sounds together to read the word. Why not have a go!
