Letters and Sounds

The nursery children follow the Primary National Strategy 'Letters and Sounds' programme on a daily basis.

We are particularly focused on Phase One of the programme which falls in line with the Communication, Language and Literacy area of learning in the Early Years Foundation Stage.

In particular, it will support linking sounds and letters in the order in which they occur in words, and naming and sounding the letters of the alphabet.

Phase One of the programme is made up of the following seven aspects.
Aspect 1: General sound discrimination - This looks closely at differentiating the sounds heard within the environment.

Aspect 2: General sound discrimination - This looks closely at differentiating between the different sounds that instruments make.

Aspect 3: General sound discrimination - This explores the sounds that can be made using parts of the body.

Aspect 4: Rhythm and Rhyme - To experience and appreciate rhythm and rhyme and to develop an awareness of rhythm and rhyme in speech.

Aspect 5: Alliteration - To explore how different sounds are articulated, and to develop an understanding of alliteration.

Aspect 6: Voice sounds - To distinguish between different vocal sounds, and to explore the different sounds we can make with our voices.

Aspect 7: Oral blending and segmenting - To develop oral blending and segmenting of sounds in words.

Activities offered to the children on a daily basis which support the seven aspects are designed to help children:
1. Listen attentively
2. Enlarge their vocabularly
3. Speak with confidence to others
4. Discriminate between letter sounds
5. Use their phonic knowledge to sound words out
