Gerald went with Mrs Dickinson on a 280 mile bike ride across Uganda in October 2012! He loved it, deciding that sitting on her bike's handlebars was the best way to travel. He won the prize for 'most miles travelled with least energy expended!
Thanks to all the children and parents who took part in the 14 or 2.8 mile bike rides, and those who scooted or walked. Together we have raised almost £4,000 for Link Community Development, which supports Marongo Primary School, our link school in the Masindi District of Uganda.
Gerald the giraffe is a well travelled school mascot. He has been on a cruise around New Zealand, to Singapore and many other places, apart from Uganda.
If you are off somewhere interesting, why not ask if you can take Gerald with you? Take a photograph of him on his trip and get it included on this page.
Gerald has visited Marongo three times now, in 2004, 2006 and 2007, with our headteacher, Mrs Dickinson. He is a good friend of their headteacher Robinah, who is just about to retire. We are hoping to establish links with the new Marongo headteacher.
All the Marongo children (about 700) and teachers are very excited when Gerald and Mrs Dickinson visit.
In 2007 he came back very worried because the new borehole, which provided Marongo School with fresh water in 2006, was already broken. He is still waiting to hear that it is mended . . . . .
