At Stanley School we use Numicon to support our teaching of maths. Numicon shapes are used to teach children systematic visual patterns. Children are very good at sensing patterns and patterns make the world predictible. It is important that children come to understand 'one more' and 'next' before they can develop an understanding of whole numbers. Counting is a complex experience and takes a long time to learn particularly for some children with special needs. Making recognisable patterns out of objects helps children to 'see' how many without counting. At Stanley School children work systematically through Numicon workcards which helps, along with a visually rich mathematical environment, to develop childrens' understanding of number.
