Choosing to study a GCSE in a language is a wise decision as a language complements every other GCSE subject. It improves students’ knowledge of their own language which helps students of English Language and Literature; it boosts creativity for those who study Art; it develops problem-solving skills for those who study Science or Maths and helps create better understanding of other countries and cultures for those who study History or Geography.

Spanish is offered to year 10 and 11 students, and offers GCSE students an alternative to French, or another language to study along side it. All students follow the WJEC GCSE Spanish syllabus. The detailed syllabus can be found at www.wjec.co.uk.

The exam assesses the 4 skills of speaking, listening, reading and wiriting. All 4 skills are worth 25% each. The reading and listening exam are done in the hall at the end of year 11, the speaking exam is done with your teacher at the end of year 11, and the writing element is assessed through coursework, which is completed throughout the 2 year course.

Students have the opportunity to work with a native Spanish assistant to improve speaking performance.
