ST GEORGE'S DAY

YEAR 5 - HAWKSHEAD

YEAR 6 - MIN-Y-DON
Day4

Day 4 - Well it has been our last full day and it has been just as great as all the others. We had all had a really good night's sleep so were ready for a full day of hill walking, canoeing, rock and crate climbing, archery and low ropes followed by a treasure hunt and MYD agents again.

It has been quite windy so the hill walk and canoeing were fun. Luckily the rain held off until the evening, but didn't prevent us from enjoying the last night game.

We will be sad to leave Min-y-Don tomorrow after our last few activities, but we are looking forward to coming home and seeing you all.

Day 3

Day 3 - Despite the forecast saying it was going to rain, it didn't! We have had a really busy day, during the morning one group went on the hill walk while the others did high ropes and crate climbing. This afternoon we took part in canoeing, archery and rock climbing followed by treasure hunt and MYD agent work!

We are all eating very well and should sleep soundly tonight too (fingers crossed!).

  Day 2

Day two has been great - the weather is glorious and the views spectacular! Although we are expecting rain tomorrow

So far the activities have included zip wire, trail biking, the hill walk, high ropes, low ropes, archery and crate climbing. The record this year for crate climbing so far is Anais with 30! Pictures will follow but struggling to access them all.

The children are all enjoying the week so far and having a go at the all the activities - achieving so much. We are very impressed with them.

  Day 1
After a good journey we arrived safely at Min-y-Don. We ate lunch, had a tour of the centre and the different activity areas and were then straight into being our first activity - trail biking, archery and zip wire (depending on which group we are in), great fun was had.

Following a good meal we met up outside at  7:30 for the night game - sardines! Lots of screams and laughter filled the cold night air. It was then time to chnge into our pjs (and onsies) for the epilogue and supper. It may only be night one but already we are tired and need a good night's sleep. ready for a full day of activities tomorrow.

We can't wait!

More photos and news tomorrow x

HEALTHY BODIES WEEK
On Monday 10th January we held an assembly about the importance of keeping our bodies healthy.  Please take a look at this slide show which was shown during the assembly

During the week the children's learning was based on being healthy.

Year 1 had a fun P.E. session with Mrs Bohannan, they used a handwashing machine to see where germs like to hide on their hands and the school nurse came in and talked to the children about being careful with medicines.

Year 2 produced non-chronological leaflets with information about exercise, medicine, food and keeping clean.

Year 4 concentrated on bones and muscles based on the Dr Xargle story and each child made a book.  A physio (ex-parent, Mrs Chaddock) showed the children some bones and cut up a chicken leg to show tendons and joints.  The children did investigations about whether an adults skull is bigger than a childs.

THE GOLDEN MILE
We are taking part in a brand new health and fitness initiative called The Golden Mile.  This scheme has been designed to encourage children to get fit and healthy within the safe environment of the school grounds by encouraging each child to walk, jog or run 50 miles throughout the school year.

A bronze certificate is awarded for achieving the 10 mile distance, Silver certificate for 25 miles and a Gold certificate for reaching 50 miles, plus extra incentive certificates throughout the year.  Technology allows each child to measure their own progress and produce charts and graphs to record it.
The focus of the scheme is on self-achievement and not competition, which allows every child to participate equally.  In addition, your child will also recieve Healthy Recipe Cards backed by some of the world's top footballers like Stevan Gerrard and Theirry Henry, and various other resources which promote healthy living.
The activity will take place on school grounds and will be supervised at all times.  Children will be able to participate in the Golden Mile during school break and lunch times, during PE lessons as well as before and after school.

The school are very keen that every child participates in the Goldren Mile as it fits with our Healthy Living ethos.

The cost to each child to take part is just £2 for the entire school year.  Please send your money to Miss Lee in the School Office.

For more information please visit the website at http://www.golden-mile.org/which will give you a greater understanding of the impact this scheme could have on your child's health.

SWITCH ON TO SWITCHING OFF FORTNIGHT
22ND NOVEMBER - 3RD DECEMBER 2010
We are involved in a pilot scheme to try to reduce our energy consumption.  As part of this focus, the EcoTeam have arranged an outside speaker to talk to the whole school on Thursday 18th November.  The Eco Team will also be carrying out classroom checks to ensure that lights and projectors are turned off in vacated rooms.  Prizes will be given to classes with the least energy consumption.

We are also asking you to get involved.  The Eco Team have registered with British Gas' "Generation Green" scheme where the school, and you, can earn leaves for becoming greener e.g. completing a home manifesto, home energy saver's report, playing The Big Green Generation Quiz etc.  Once you have donated your leaves, they may then be redeemed by the school for equipment.

Over the fortnight campaign, the Eco Team will be monitoring any leaf donations by families and will be awarding a prize to the class who complete the most home manifestos.  If you do not wish to add your name (which is optional) to the Generation Green website, please notify the school by writing a letter to your child's class teacher so that the Eco Team can calculate the results for the class prize.

Please follow this link to complete your home manifesto:

Good luck everybody!
