Our topic this term is Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson. It would be beneficial if the children had their own copy of the text - ideally the Usbourne version.
In our Literacy, we are looking forward to writing wanted posters for our Pirates, creating our own Treasure Islands and then writing our own adventures! Also, we plan to look at the life of a Pirate. The children will write a Captain's log, a Pirate code and a handbook on how to survive as life of a Pirate!
In science, we will look at solids, liquids and gases before helping Jim drink fresh water on the Island by separating insoluble and soluble solids in a liquid. Finally, we will look at how to survive on the Treasure Island by cooking and irreversible change.
In history we will look at explorers and exploration and the life of Pirates. In geography, we will initially look at map work with grid references and how to show height on a map using colour and contour lines.
For technology, we will look at building a shelter to help Ben Gunn survive on the Island and in art we will use natural materials found on the Island to make sculptures in the style of Andy Goldsworthy.
The topic will culminate in the End of Year Show with Years 5 and 6 performing "The Pirates of the Currybean!" |
