School Improvement Officer (SIO)
The SIO role is integral to the LA's improvement agenda and acts as the primary interface between the LA and schools.
The key fubnction of SIO is to support and challenge schools to raise standards of achievement through the provision of a broad, balanced, high quality education for all pupils.
Blackburn with Darwen, through the deployment of link SIOs to every school, working alongside a range of LA Officers, are committed to a 'partnership model' for working with schools and other settings.
SIOs recognise and take notice of the fact that the context of each school is very different and is at a specific and unique stage of development.
Through SIO visits, potential issues will be quickly identified and sources of appropriate support identified.
School Improvement is designed, through support and challenge, to build inrernal capacity for change and improvement and empower schools to improve themselves and to support each other in improving.
1.  Raising attainment at all ages
2.  Narrowing the gap by improving outcomes for low attaining and vulnerable groups of pupils
3.  Identifying and supporting vulnerable and underperforming schools
4.  Developing capacity for improvement through:
5.  Leadership development and succession planning
6.  Promoting and facilitating school to school support
7.  Supporting schools to develop self evaluation and more effectively assess and determine their needs and priorities
