Our main theme this half term is 'An Island Home'. We will spend several weeks studying the Katie Morag books which are written by Mairi Hedderwick. We will then move on to learning about other islands around the world.

We have now moved on to our 'Nocturnal Animal' unit of work.

Last Week
Numeracy
We started the new half term by revising the value of each digit in a two and three digit number. We have continued to count in 2's, 5's and 10s forwards and backwards. Some of the children need help to count back over the tens number e.g 42, 41, 40, 39. Practising this at home would be really useful. Most of the children use Mathletics regularly and this is evident in their achievement. If you have any difficulties accessing Mathletics regularly please let me know so that alternative arrangements can be made.
Literacy
We have shared several Katie Morag stories this week. The children are beginning to consider Katie Morag's personality traits and we have worked on referring to events and illustrations in the text to justify our opinions. Whenever you are reading together at home it would be useful to practise this skill. Describing the character is only part of the task, using the text to justfy your answer is much more tricky.
Phonics
Mrs Ritchie's group worked will continue to work on a range of objectives from the Year 2 and 3 spelling exemplification document. Our spelling tests will no longer be in phonetic groups, as we will now test high frequency and medium frequency words. Our spelling tests are going well with many children improving their scores each week. Keep up the good work.
