Helping children with domestic abuse

Over 300 school children witness domestic abuse every month in Blackburn with Darwen – but if one child plucks up courage to confide in you, would you know what to do for the best?

Blackburn with Darwen Council, is offering the following free domestic abuse training packages for schools:

Free training for teachers, teaching assistants and other school staff to help better understand the issue, how to spot the danger signs and know what to do if a child confides in you or you suspect domestic abuse.

Free courses for children, tailored to all ages, which sensitively discuss relationships, managing conflict and how to stay safe.

The WISH Centre delivers the domestic abuse support service on behalf of Blackburn with Darwen Council and has extensive experience of supporting and protecting children and their families.

NFER for schools - attitude surveys for pupils, parents and staff

NFER are currently in the process of writing to schools to inform about the 2011/2012 NFER attitude survey service. The service offers schools an efficient way to gather the views of parents, pupils and staff in schools and provides a comprehensive analysis report with comparisons to national norms. The pupil survey is based on children’s well-being and satisfaction with the school and has been designed to be accessible to pupils from year 3 to pupils in year 13; the parent survey and staff surveys cover all sectors.

They have made some changes to the service this year following feedback from participating schools in previous years, including the addition of a new staff survey. The pricing structure for the service has been revised for simplicity and is based on school size and the reporting package has been updated.
