Year 11 Revision Session – Mondays and Tuesdays this half term.
Revision sessions from 3.45 – 4.45pm in the E block.
Every Monday from 3rd March – Physics and History.
Every Tuesday from 4th March – Spanish and Biology.
Students should go to the E block and put their name down on a list for the subjects required.
This is a great opportunity – don’t miss it!

UK Intermediate Mathematical Challenge – Approximately 100 of our Year 9, 10 and 11 students were entered for this event and we have recently received the results. There were over 167,000 entries nationally and the level of competition, as always, was very high. Nine of our students have been invited to compete in a further round, later this month.

Graeme Addison, Nick Calvert, Andrew Campbell, Arjun Chandna, Chris Harland and Andrew Platt in Year 11 and Michael McAloon and James Hargreaves in Year 10 will participate in the European Kangaroo, which is taking place in over 25 countries. Jason Warren in Year 9 will compete in the IMOK Olympiad from which 40 students will be selected and offered scholarships towards covering the cost of attending a special summer school. Only the very best students have been invited to take part in this event, therefore, Jason deserves particular praise for his achievements to date. We wish all these boys success in the next round.

Congratulations also go to all students mentioned and to those who will receive certificates. In all, 19 students have gold awards, 23 silver and 28 bronze. In addition, Nick Calvert will receive a ‘Best in School” certificate.

Italian Drama Festival – A group of boys in Year 10 will be travelling to Rome in April to take part in
an international youth theatre festival. They will be performing a musical show called Highway to Hell, a modern adaptation of the Faust legend. It features songs by bands as varied as The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Reel Big Fish and Less Than Jake. The students are paying their own expenses but we do need funds to send a van with instruments and sound equipment to meet us in Italy. If you have contacts with local businesses that might be willing to sponsor us, please put us in touch with them. Please contact Mr Lewton at school.

We will be putting on one performance of the show in school on the evening of 7th April. Please support us if you can.

Modern Languages Festival - Calday Grange Grammar School will be hosting this year’s Modern Languages Festival on Saturday, 15th March, from 9.30am to 1.00pm. All secondary schools in Wirral have been invited to take part in this event. Calday is entering two acts – a French Rock Song (Upper & Lower 6th students) and a further sketch acted by members of Years 7 and 8. We hope this will be an entertaining morning and look forward to seeing as many people as possible. Many thanks to all staff and students who have given up so much of their time.

Army Exhibition for Schools – Mr Adcock, Contingent Commander CCF, is organising a visit to the Army Exhibition for Schools in Catterick on one of the following dates: 17/18/19 June 2003 and is open to members of Year 9 and Year 10 who may be interested in the Army. (You do not have to be a member of the CCF to attend.) It will be a packed day with static displays, arena displays, army careers briefing stands and a chance to take part in an obstacle course competition. If pupils are interested, parents are requested to write to Mr Adcock by 27th March with the full name of their son and contact phone number. Pupils will also require permission to be absent from school. There is no cost to individuals other than for lunch and snacks. Dress for the visit will be smart school uniform. A full briefing letter will be produced after confirmation from the Army of attendance – this will be in May. If parents require further information, please contact Mr Adcock at the school.

Cross-country
Merseyside Schools League results from Arrowe Park last Saturday:
Under 12 2nd –finishing as runner-up; Under 14 – Division 2 Champions; Under 19 1st – finishing as Champions.
Congratulations to Graham Jones (L6GE), who finished 4th in last Saturday’s Merseyside Schools League Under 19 race, led the Calday 6th Form team to the League Champions title, with good support from Neil Davies, Sean McColl, Craig Mower, Peter Lomas and Mark Webster. Graham also gained selection for the Merseyside Schools team competing in this Saturday’s English Schools Championships over what is likely to be a very hilly course at the Sussex University campus at Stanmer Park outside Brighton. He thus joins Ben Jones, who will be competing in his fourth English Schools Championships.
On Wednesday a young team of six Year 9 runners (Michael Stanley, Luke Pedley, David Schorah, Joe Lightfoot, Iain Dodd and Steven Fearnley) acquitted themselves well finishing fifth in the St Edward’s Sandfield Park Under 16 Road Relay.
There has been no word of confirmation of the usual Delamere Forest event expected to take place this Saturday and so there will be a Saturday morning training session at Sherdley Park St Helens in preparation for the Northern Schools Championships next Saturday.
On Tuesday we want to take as many Year 7 and Year 8 runners as possible to Arrowe Park for the Wirral Schools Spring Championships. The races will be over 1 mile in the middle section of the park with the start and finish on “Hospital Hill”. The Year 7 boys will start at 4.37 and the Year 8 boys at 4.51. A bus/coach (50p) will take them to Arrowe Park. Lifts home from Arrowe Park will need to be arranged. Year 7 boys will be able to leave the park by 5 p.m. and Year 8 boys by 5.15 p.m.
The March 29th Cheadle Hulme School Invitation Cross-country Relay (last year’s winners – Calday) has been switched to a morning start.

Roller Blading Competition – A team of 10 Calday boys competed in our first ever roller blading competition against Pensby School on Monday, 3rd march. Pensby won the competition by scoring 452 points against Calday’s 428 points. It was an excellent competition, very much enjoyed by all who took part and by the spectators.

Well done to all of you! Your attitude and behaviour has set the scene for further meetings for blading and skate boarding in the future.

Table Tennis - 12 boys took part in the Merseyside Schools’ Individual Championships at New Ferry.
U16 David Earnshaw and Ben McTaggart got to second round
13 year old Mike Horobin reached the semi-finals.
U13 James Zarbal, Chris Jones and Dhruv Sharma went out in the groups.
Tim Rose, Tom Stowell-Smith and John O’Neill went out in the second round.
Matthew Knight, Guan-Wei Tsang and Josh McTaggart reached the last four of the semi-finals and in the semi Guan-Wei beat Josh in one semi-final and Matthew won the other semi-final making it an all Calday final.

In the final Guan-Wei beat Matthew 11-9 in the fifth end which means they both received trophies and Guan-Wei is now the Merseyside U13 Champion for 2003 and will be invited to the National finals to be held at Fenton Manor, Stoke on Trent, on Saturday, 26th April.

Book Club – A reminder that book club orders are due in by Monday, 10th March.
