Support Staff Development

Programmes are currently available for support staff induction, teaching assistant development, cover supervisor training and HLTAs. We map our provision to the National Occupational Standards for Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools and the Higher Level Teaching Assistant Standards in order that delegates have the opportunity to use them towards accreditation towards formal qualifications. Performance Management Training

We offer annual training sessions for headteachers and senior leaders, teacher reviewes and support staff line managers. For further information please go to the 'Performance Management' area of this site.

Stepping up to Leadership

This programme is now in its third successful year and has so far engaged nearly 150 of our aspiring and newly appointed middle leaders. The programme is run by schools for schools. Candidates get to hear first hand about various aspects of middle leadership from practising senior and middle leaders from our secondar and special schools. For successful completion of the programme, which is endorsed by the Blackburn with Darwen Education Improvement Partnership, candidates must complete one compulsory module and at least five optional modules. They also have the opportunity to submit a portfolio of evidence and/or an assigment for accreditation at masters level through the authority's partnership with Edge Hill University. This is worth 20 CAT points at M level. Up to 60 CAT points can be accessed free of charge through the partnership. Secondary Leading from the Middle Collaborative

The Leaders of Professional Learning have worked closely with The Centre for Educational Leadership at the University of Manchester to secure 23 places on the National College Leading from the Middle programme. Candidates, with the support of their leadership coaches will be focussing on the role of the middle leader at times of transformation. This has been designed to support the borough's Building Schools for the Future programme and will be particularly looking at the transformation of learning. Getting Ahead: secondary succession planning programme

Candidates for this programme are Assistant and Deputy Headteachers who wish to progress towards Deputy Headship and Headship. They are nominated by the Headteacher in their school. The programme includes:

access to a range of twilight workshops
the opportunit to workshadow a serving headteacher
coaching
a two day leadership development course

The twilight workshops can also be accessed by other secondary school senior leaders who are not formally part of the programme but wish to further their knowledge and skills in a particular area.
