URGENT - Bursary Funding - Bursary Funding available towards SSA Training - short deadline!

The DFE have announced £500,000 of bursary funding towards SSA training. The bursary is for up to £2,000 per candidate as 50% funding towards degree level training. Candidates have to be L3 or HLTA, work in an eligible school in England, work with pupils with learning difficulties or disabilities and have the support of the Head teacher. There is a tight turnaround for applying for the funding in that applications open 30th April and close 17th May, candidates have to indentify the course they wish to do and complete an online application form. Executive Summary of a Serious Case Review


On 26 January 2012 North Somerset Safeguarding Board published an Overview Report and an Executive Summary of a Serious Case Review (SCR) conducted after the arrest of a teacher suspected of abusing children in his care.  Many of you will be familiar with the case which received significant media coverage. 


When publishing the SCR Overview Report and Executive Summary the LSCB Chair recommended that the SCR was read by every head teacher, every chair of governors and safeguarding boards across the country because of the issues it raises and the recommendations it makes.


The Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Children and Families, Tim Loughton MP, has asked, exceptionally in this case, for the SCR to be brought to the attention of all LSCBs to consider the implications for schools in their areas. All schools and nursery providers are asked to note the attached letter from the Health Protection Agency (HPA) regarding measles. (View Document)
Also attached is an information leaflet from the HPA giving advice on how to recognise and deal with any outbreaks of measles among children. (View Document)


While the letter identifies an outbreak of measles that has occurred in the Liverpool area, local schools and nursery providers are requested to ask your staff to be extra vigilant at this time.

This is a reminder to all schools of their duties under the Equality Act 2010, following on from the presentations at both the Primary and Secondary Headteacher Forums - specifically around Equality Impact Assessments (EIA) and Equality Objectives.  


 A reminder of the agreed approach is that schools will:

  • Prioritise those policies that must be EIA'd prior to 6th April 2012 and complete an EIA.
  • Conduct EIAs on the remaining policies at their next review.
  • Begin work on Equality Objectives so that they are ready for Governing Bodies to review and adopt in FGB meetings in the spring term (deadline for publication of objectives 6th April 2012).

In support of this, Children's Services' Policy, Planning and Performance team will:

  • Deliver training to Governors via the training schedule.
  • Offer support to schools as requested around completion or scrutiny of EIAs.  During the forums the possibility of schools meeting up to complete an EIA on a fairly standard policy as a workshop style event was discussed.  Should any schools wish to pursue this please contact us.
  • Ensure that any policies or procedures issued from the Local Authority are accompanied by a completed EIA, which schools can scrutinise and adopt with the policy - whilst ensuring it is amended if applicable to reflect the individual school.

DRAFT School holiday pattern 2013/2014

I am seeking your comments on the proposed dates which once again have been recommended by the LGA and have been adopted by Lancashire County Council.
