Parent Governor Vacancy - 01 October 2014 - Mr James

We have a vacancy for 2 parent governors which we need to fill as soon as possible.

We know parents are interested in the education of their children and keen to see that the school provides a challenging education for all the pupils who come here.  Please do not assume that there will be others coming forward who are better equipped for the job; we need enthusiasm and a willingness to work as a member of the team far more than any specific knowledge or expertise!

The governing body of a school is responsible for ensuring that pupils receive high quality education and that the conduct of the school reflects this aim. The governors work as a team with the head teacher in the whole strategic planning and management of the school. Their responsibilities include consideration and agreement of the aims and policies of the school, discussion and approval of the targets for improvement, appointment of staff, setting and monitoring the budget, monitoring the performance of the school and reporting to the parents and community on how they have accomplished their tasks. Governors are the link between the school and the community and representatives of all those with an interest in the well-being and reputation of the school are needed. Parents are very important in keeping the governing body aware of the views of parents and the local community. They are a vital part of our team.

There is first class advice and support available to you and training for your new role at no cost to you.

The chair of the governing body or headteacher will be happy to talk to you if you are interested in being nominated and/or want further information. You may also wish to contact Blackburn with Darwen Governance and Liaison team on (01254) 666507 or visit the Council’s website at:  - School Governors.

Additional forms are available on the school website and from the school office

If you would like to take the opportunity to put yourself forward as a candidate, please complete and return the attached documents to Mr Fred Nelson, School Business Manager by 12:00 noon on Monday 13th October 2014.  If it is necessary for there to be an election, I will contact you to let you know about the arrangements.

If there are more nominations than vacancies, an election will be held on 28th October 2014 and you will be sent a voting paper. You may return the ballot paper either via your child or by post.

BCHS with Crosshill is now HMC Certified - 24 September 2014 - Mr James

Last week BCHS with Crosshill was awarded with the HMC Halal certificate, that proves that all meat and poultry served at BCHS with Crosshill is HMC certified.
Benefits of HMC Accreditation for Schools

- The ‘HMC Standard for Schools’ accreditation will allow school to demonstrate that food is prepared and served in a manner that is verifiably consistent with Islamic rulings.

- HMC envisages that HMC accreditation by schools with a significant proportion of Muslim children will instil confidence in Muslim parents that their children are consuming genuinely Halal.

- This will also allow the school to ensure that children consume lunch that has the desired nutritional content.

- As part of the HMC accreditation, school will be invited to a free training event for staff to ensure that they are aware of the requirements of ‘Halal’ catering. This will be particularly useful for the induction of new staff as well as ensuring consistent practice in your school.

Community Cohesion at Central High - 24 September 2014 - Mr James

So far this term Blackburn Central High School has held two Cohesion Days, where primary school pupils can integrate with students from across Blackburn, share ideas and celebrate diversity.

A large variety of activities took place including multicultural poetry, science experiments, and using sport to reduce barriers.

Miss Uzma Hussain from St. Stephen’s CE Primary commented that the pupils “…thoroughly enjoyed themselves and loved all the sessions, in particular the baking and science sessions. All the staff and pupils were extremely friendly. We were well looked after for the whole day.”

Welcome from the Headteacher - Mrs Atkinson - 01 September 2014 - Mr James

Welcome from the Headteacher

This September it is my priority to support and accelerate the progress of all of our Year 7 students. We have introduced a number of strategies to support those students who are underachieving, helping students who achieved less than a Level 4 to catch up.

Reading is a high priority, with all students reading four times a week to improve their skills; those who require it have extra support to improve their reading ability.

BCHS opened its doors two years ago in September 2012. We are now a growing and thriving community that has filled almost all of its places in Year 7. We are very proud to have been awarded joint first most improved school in the country 2009-12 by the Department for Education. In November 2012 we were judged to be a good school by Ofsted; ‘leaders have been determined and successful in improving teaching and students’ achievement’

There are no secrets to an excellent education: it entails good teaching and learning, strong support and hard work. We pride ourselves on knowing and caring for all our students whilst having high expectations and ambitions for them all. We want our students to stretch themselves and reach further than they ever thought possible. Our motto is ‘striving for outstanding’ and this is something we aspire to for all our students in their academic and personal development. Positive relationships between staff and students are key to our success as we know young people are inspired to learn from the people they like and respect.

We are very proud of all our young people at BCHS. They are smart, polite, well behaved and keen to learn. I hope you find our prospectus informative and invite you to experience our school for yourselves either on Open Evening or during the normal school day. We welcome any parent/carer who would like to visit school, please phone and make an appointment.

GCSE Results Summer 2014 - 21 August 2014 - Mr James

I am so proud of the students and my staff for their achievements this year. BCHS have exceeded by 3% their overall target set based on the students’ performance at Key Stage 2. This in itself demonstrates the hard work and commitment by all.

Individual exceptional performance goes to Safwaan Khan who achieved 11 A*/A grades along with Ayesa Imran and Billy Maxwell who achieved 8 A*/A grades each.

We continue to pursue excellence and are positioned to make further increases in the forthcoming year.
- Mrs Diane Atkinson
